[00:00:00] Hey y'all, welcome to the latest episode of Catch the Fuck Up. I'm Fern and I'm Nicole and Ouch.

[00:00:10] So we are looking at My Hero Academia chapter 417. Title is Schumacher and it's hurtful,

[00:00:20] it's emotional and it's a day late because we were traveling and having fun. Yeah and we're not sorry.

[00:00:27] Maybe I'm a little sorry but not enough to be actually sorry. No, no, we were having a grand

[00:00:33] old time and could not be fucked. Yeah, could not and I'm kind glad we didn't read this chapter

[00:00:41] while we were having fun. Yeah, yeah, yeah, not the vibe very very different vibe. Very different.

[00:00:49] Oh my goodness. All right, should we get right to it? Yeah, let's dive right in. So the chapter

[00:00:56] starts and then we pick up right where we left off with Izuku, in fact landing a blow on the

[00:01:04] giant spherical cocoon of fingers. Yeah, he's finally punched his way through. Yep. And of course

[00:01:13] my first thought was what's going to happen to all the the fingers that go flying? Are they're

[00:01:18] just going to be fingers all over Japan or are they going to like turn to dust? That is happened.

[00:01:24] A great question because so many body parts have been flung and so many body parts there all

[00:01:30] going to be relics and in a generation it's going to be a bunch of weird orthodox people

[00:01:36] worshipping Shigeraki's fingers. I mean, they do kind of look like they're disintegrating at

[00:01:42] the edges. So that but I love the idea of a finger orthodox church. Yes, that's terrifying and

[00:01:49] hilarious. I mean all the other relics are just finger bones. That's true. That's true. A lot

[00:01:55] of a lot of st. bones out there. So anyway, back to the actual chapter. So with this punch landed,

[00:02:03] we see the little drone go flying because there's a shock wave. And then we get a few quick shots

[00:02:09] of a few different people viewing it around the world. I don't think we're supposed to recognize

[00:02:13] anyone except maybe the guy who looks like the guy from fairy tale from a while ago who was

[00:02:20] endeavor as big as span and whatever. Basically, they give us the update that with this shock wave,

[00:02:27] the audience or whoever is tuning in to this fight, they can't really see what's happening now.

[00:02:33] Yeah, no clue what's going on, which is good because there's about to be not very much to see

[00:02:38] on the physical plane. So yep, exactly. So we go to we continue on. We see the punch land. We see

[00:02:45] more fingers flying apart. We see Izuku looking badass and we see Shiggy getting punched just right in

[00:02:50] the gut. And it's probably some sort of chakra reference because there's like a stomach chakra,

[00:02:56] right? Yes, yes, there is. But I forget what it corresponds to. I should probably shut up. What do

[00:03:01] I know who knows? But he does he does land a blow that basically just makes Shiggy's face go

[00:03:09] out. So we know it landed well and we know it also just pierced right through his his mental

[00:03:16] shields because his inner core is now exploding as well. Yeah, shattered right through that bitch.

[00:03:24] Yep. And so you continue and we get an update that Nana Shimura is the only

[00:03:31] specter vestige left because the other four that had gone with her on that same punch were able to

[00:03:39] make their their attacks land. So she's the only one who got repelled this time.

[00:03:46] Yeah, including Banjo which is interesting. Yeah, because yeah, Izuku doesn't have his

[00:03:52] his homemade brace anymore. Yeah, so it's going to be it's going to be interesting to see what's

[00:03:58] left of Izuku but I mean hopefully he like I don't know. I don't want to think about that.

[00:04:04] Well, I figured out, but yeah, Nana is alone and oh Jesus Christ.

[00:04:08] Yep, Nana in emotions. Yep, she's alone and we get some flashbacks and we get some memories

[00:04:15] basically boiling down to the fact that Nana is realizing that Shigi hates her like just as much

[00:04:22] as anyone, just as much as his family just as much as anyone could be hated.

[00:04:29] Yeah, intentionally or not she has played a role in this wheel of torture.

[00:04:34] Yep. And she does make the comment that my own weakness is to blame which is a loaded statement.

[00:04:41] Yeah, that a lot to unpack there. Yep, which she should unpack in therapy.

[00:04:48] Yeah, but she's dead now so I don't know. Hashtag playing therapy?

[00:04:52] Yeah, yeah. So Izuku is sweet little boy who is now in his UA school uniform not his shirtless

[00:05:04] present state not his hero uniform is his school uniform.

[00:05:10] And he goes to ring the buzzer.

[00:05:13] I know right? Oh my god, unfailingly polite always.

[00:05:17] Yeah, so he goes to ring the buzzer but he is stopped by Shadowzuku.

[00:05:25] I know right. It's basically a shadow form of himself asking like what are you doing?

[00:05:32] What do you expect to find? And he and Izuku realizes that this shadowzuku is just the latest

[00:05:39] projection from Shigi's mind, how Shigi is viewing him, how he like doesn't want to really

[00:05:46] delve deeper like Izuku does. Yeah, this was really interesting that Izuku is kind of like a no-mo.

[00:05:55] He looks like he almost looks like I'm mother fucker.

[00:05:59] Courgary. Yes. Yeah, yeah that's an interesting comparison definitely.

[00:06:04] And basically the shadowy Izuku asks like what even would be the point of delving deeper?

[00:06:10] Would it change anything? And Izuku is like I don't know but I'm not punching him in the face

[00:06:15] until I find out if the punch is warranted because he's Izuku and a baby.

[00:06:21] He's like I have to try it this way even if it doesn't work because if I don't I'm going to

[00:06:26] think about it forever. So before I go on macho man we're going to try my therapy corg first.

[00:06:32] Yep and he says you will let me in so back from when it started with a show toe when he kind

[00:06:38] of accidentally let him into the friendship Izuku is like now yes we are going we are going

[00:06:44] to therapist this we are going to do this and then he almost gets hit by a truck. Yeah

[00:06:50] because we got to get a nice Yusukei reference and I guess yeah I don't know that's so funny

[00:06:58] it's like what would have happened if he had been hit would he have been Yusukeied back to his own

[00:07:02] world. I don't know or would he have been Yusukeied to the fantasy AU to somewhere else entirely

[00:07:08] or just into a coma. We know. Fan writers get on that. Yes get on that find out what truck

[00:07:16] was going to do with Yusukei but Yusukei does dodge it but he does notice that it like

[00:07:21] scrapes his backpack because back back kind of gets sideswiped and it's revealed that any damage

[00:07:27] he would take here is actually going to like affect him physically like because they are so deep

[00:07:33] within the subconscious between them their thoughts. What happens on the astral plane actually

[00:07:40] happens it doesn't always be on the astral plane. Yes it's not Vegas.

[00:07:45] All right and then Shima her pops up and she's like I always the only one to get repelled again

[00:07:49] I'm sorry and Yusukei is like it's fine I'm glad you're still here. I know god he's so sweet

[00:07:56] and Nana's just looking at him like you are too cute. Like you are too kind and too sweet to me

[00:08:03] and then she continues her mentor role and she's like this is the space of like Shigei's

[00:08:09] origin this is where he is most malleable this is where we are going to basically be able to get

[00:08:17] at everything directly that is wrong with his subconscious. This is his core trauma.

[00:08:22] This is his core trauma yes right? Alright so with that Yusukei try to launch at Shado Yusukei again

[00:08:31] but Shado Yusukei jumps in the air and leaps down and suddenly it's not Shado Yusukei it's stained.

[00:08:35] Yep yep yep and so staying kind of stabs him kind of gets a nice hidden on his arm and he says

[00:08:44] that's why you're about to die which I'm pretty sure is what is something that Stain said a while ago

[00:08:51] but then he like glitches and morphs into redestero's phase and redestero gets in one of his lines

[00:08:59] and then redestero morphs into overhaul who says got a plan which I believe is also one of his lines

[00:09:06] from their original fight so three villains coming at him. They're not just Yusukei's villains they are

[00:09:18] Shigees and Yusukei's villains. That's true all my fucking god you're correct. Yep because I don't

[00:09:24] think he ever fought redestero even in the like the second round or whatever it was. I genuinely don't

[00:09:29] remember. It doesn't matter because he Yusukei does respond to overhaul who asks if he has a plan

[00:09:35] and he says nope. He just he just fights through and he just says nope get out of my way which oh my god

[00:09:42] Yusukei fucking love you so much. Yep he's like nope this isn't about you overhaul so he like basically

[00:09:49] gets past and tosses inside throws the door open and instead of getting into the house he throws

[00:09:54] the door open to reveal the photograph that little baby Shige and his sister found which started

[00:10:01] all the trauma. Yep Nana and her son who she had to quote unquote abandon yes and with that we get

[00:10:11] the dialogue from that scene which is playing out from Shige's head and it's Shige's sister

[00:10:16] talking and it's like telling him that this is grandma it's a secret and Shima was like oh my god

[00:10:22] he kept the photo. Oh Nana oh you poor thing so with that now Yusuke and Shima or Yusuke and Nana

[00:10:36] continue into what becomes the backyard and with Shige's sister like saying we're gonna be a hero

[00:10:45] team but we have to keep a secret from daddy they witness how Kotaro does physically slap and

[00:10:52] physically abuse little baby Tengo and little baby Tengo it should be said is not detailed he's just

[00:11:01] a silhouette in darkness. Yep yep he's he's a shadow form. Yep and Yusuke sees it he's like

[00:11:09] fucking rude. Yeah he's like mother fucker fucking knowing. Yep and Shima is gasping and crying

[00:11:16] because I don't think she knew at this point that she didn't know shit all she knew was that Shige

[00:11:22] was a villain and that they were related she had no idea what happened between her death and Shige

[00:11:28] getting. Yeah she just she just figured something went wrong that was probably in some way having to

[00:11:36] do with her being unable to be there for her son but she didn't know it was this bad. No no not at all

[00:11:44] yep and then it keeps going and Yusuke of course runs to the silhouette child because of course he

[00:11:50] does. Yeah exactly. Beautiful soul. Yep and this time there's no there's no legal system that he

[00:11:57] has to be aware of and work around this time he can just snatch the baby. He can just snatch the

[00:12:02] baby maybe punch the father on his way because he's being sick. Yeah but instead of being able to

[00:12:10] immediately rescue Little Baby Tango there is a barrier and they are repelled again they are

[00:12:16] rejected again from interfering with this core traumatic memory. Mm-hmm. These are those poor things

[00:12:25] yep heavy and then and then we continue with the flashback with Kotaro's dialogue saying

[00:12:33] your grandmother she wasn't a hero she wasn't that's not actually your grandmother that is actually

[00:12:38] a monster who abandoned her family and Shima is devastated she's just like oh my gosh my family

[00:12:46] it's all my faults. Yeah because he was he was so little and she was put in such a horrific

[00:12:52] you know position but you know obviously she didn't have time to explain yep and then she died before

[00:13:00] before anything could be explained like at all so I mean she was trying to save his life but

[00:13:05] yep and unfortunately he couldn't know that. He couldn't know that and whatever support system he may

[00:13:10] or may not have had after that didn't explain it properly enough or in a way that wasn't

[00:13:16] just traumatic so it's like yes sometimes people just refuse to process things and they refuse

[00:13:25] to rethink their original impression yep so like yes it is kind of non as well but it also isn't

[00:13:32] kind of non as well yeah it's just fucking sucks like it's horrible it fucking sucks and there's

[00:13:39] nothing she could do about it yep and it continues and Shima and Nana continues hearing Kotaro's

[00:13:47] basically his opinions of heroes and how she made them in the fact that heroes are monsters who

[00:13:54] abandoned their families to supposedly help complete strangers while leaving him behind as a

[00:13:58] little baby child. And so she's realizing that he couldn't abandon that trauma he couldn't process it

[00:14:10] and so those were scars that she inflicted on Kotaro and then Kotaro inflicted them on

[00:14:15] little baby Tengo who became Shiger Rocky and she's like if I had just beaten all for one in that

[00:14:20] battle I could have gone home to my son and none of this would have happened and she's just spiraling

[00:14:24] and crying and it's bad and she says I'm sorry Kotaro as unfortunately Kotaro does raise his hand

[00:14:32] again to hit Silhouette Tengo yeah and Izuku is like Shima and now like with this he's like we're

[00:14:43] gonna do this now and the vestige returns to his hand and Nana is basically apologizing to Kotaro as

[00:14:52] Izuku breaks through the mental barrier Izuku goes for Tengo while Shima stops the blow from being

[00:14:59] landed and she apologizes to what is in reality Shigis' memory of his father and she says I'm sorry that

[00:15:08] I never made it home to you and she with that she disappears and the entirety of Shigis' core is

[00:15:17] pierced and it's now it's just crumbling around him yeah yeah and so with that we flip to what I

[00:15:27] presume to be Shigis' point of view or even Tengo's point of view and it says sorry grandma's to blame

[00:15:34] oh I think that's I think that's still Nana and she's like talking to yep it might be it's not she's

[00:15:40] like summarizing her thoughts yeah and so with that little Silhouette Tengo watches a memory Kotaro

[00:15:50] fade because it's just all coming down to this one point and he says I hate it and it is now

[00:15:58] back to that night when his quirk activated and he says I hate it you hear me mom I can't take it

[00:16:05] and it's this moment where he is unfortunately hurting and killing his dog but he doesn't realize it

[00:16:10] and it's very sad and he's about to he's about to go nuclear yeah he's about to go nuclear

[00:16:16] quirk awakening yes and Izuku is there now to see this and now it was important to point out

[00:16:23] he's in his middle school uniform and that's where the chapter ends and apparently we don't get

[00:16:29] the next one for two weeks and yeah why oh god yeah but I think it's so revealing that even what we

[00:16:39] would probably consider Tengo's core trauma which is the abuse he suffered from his dad for Tengo

[00:16:45] his core trauma is actually that moment when he fucking lost it and he feels like he ruined

[00:16:50] everything he lost it and there was no one there to help him and all again he was literally five

[00:16:56] and having a highly destructive quirk like that is yeah terrifying yep yep and also your traumas are

[00:17:03] not necessarily the events that are happening like I mean it's hard to argue that killing your

[00:17:08] entire family even by accident is not traumatic oh it clearly it is clearly this is a core trauma

[00:17:14] and that's so revealing because sometimes it's not the things that happen to you it's how you

[00:17:18] respond whoops sorry I dropped my phone but like it's how you respond that ends up scarring you the

[00:17:23] most like sometimes your response causes you to scar yourself yeah it's like your response and also

[00:17:29] sometimes it is the lack of a support system around you able to oh yeah yeah with the

[00:17:34] context of course but you know the way your brain chooses to process things obviously the way

[00:17:40] you react is sometimes more jarring than what happens to you because it shatters your sense of

[00:17:45] yes exactly and with that and there is no one around to help him except AFO but now

[00:17:51] Izuku is there at this moment so hopefully Izuku is going to continue

[00:17:55] theorizing him in this moment I'm sure we're gonna have a we're gonna have a moment where you know

[00:18:02] Tango bloodly explodes everyone into dust and he's gonna be like you see what kind of monster I am

[00:18:09] and Izuku is like you are literally a child you are a baby yeah he's like yeah this is

[00:18:15] fucking horrifying and I'm so sorry you had to go through it yeah and he's like this is literally

[00:18:20] not even my first kid with a terrible cork awakening like I get it I'm here with you it's okay

[00:18:27] you're a baby yeah yeah guess what not my first rodeo you're not the first child murderer I've met

[00:18:35] yep and hopefully well maybe he might not be the last but it's for the future to decide and I

[00:18:41] wonder I wonder if it's going to also like with that scene and then follow it up by

[00:18:47] AFO coming into the picture I wonder if Izuku is going to stand up to AFO or if they're

[00:18:51] going to touch that or if it's just gonna be about sweet little baby Tango yeah it'll be interesting

[00:18:56] because like is there any bit of AFO vestige left in Tango I guess we'll find out yeah and even

[00:19:03] if there's not that memory of being taken in by a monster itself is probably going to have to be

[00:19:11] defeated or therapist in some sort of way yeah something like that oh my god yeah this what

[00:19:18] this would have been a downer to read while we were having fun with with tacos and donuts yeah

[00:19:24] trying to like bond with our friends yeah yeah good the correct choices were made oh man

[00:19:33] that was such a good chapter though I mean it was amazing or a coach he was gonna knock it out of the

[00:19:37] park so so fucking deep so fucking well executed also so many layers you were you were spoiled for this

[00:19:45] chapter by what a Google news alert oh yeah I got a Google news alert that said like Nana um

[00:19:52] like breaks into Tango's or like Nana is able to access Tango's like memories or whatever I can't

[00:19:59] remember how they play I just saw the title and I was like oh well I guess Nana is gonna be relevant

[00:20:03] she's gonna see what's going on it's gonna be horrible and emotional so it's gonna be her

[00:20:07] rodeo and the her vestiges important and dang it Google for spoilers yeah yeah but yeah that I mean

[00:20:14] when you have a writing that's good spoilers only matter so much so much yeah for sure um so yeah

[00:20:20] we will find out what happens next maybe in two weeks or we might go some more completely different

[00:20:27] um because I feel like I still feel like karukumo has got to come into it because of how

[00:20:33] like central he is to Tango's becoming shiggy after this moment so but like him Mike and karukumo all

[00:20:42] disappearing somewhere and we're just not knowing where they went I mean that's basically a check-offs

[00:20:47] gun right like yes the gun got taken off the wall when is it gonna fire yes exactly so I feel like

[00:20:54] we're going to find out what's going on with them soon and yeah they're going to become

[00:21:00] relevant somehow to this emotional showdown um but it's unclear how it's going to happen

[00:21:08] and we won't find out for 13 days and how dare oh my god oh lord this this whole last bit of arc is

[00:21:17] just gonna be so emotionally devastating like every single one is just gonna break our hearts

[00:21:21] it's just gonna it's just gonna break our hearts whether it is a fun positive chapter like

[00:21:26] I feel like the last chapter was or we're just gonna get punched in the face

[00:21:30] yep yep yep the width lash will destroy us yep yep and we will enjoy it the whole time
